  • lack of Service sporting and recreation facilities
  • extra travelling to medical appointments you may face when working in the capital

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 8, section 5) before proceeding.

RRA(L) is paid to Service personnel of OR4 rank/Leading Hand/Corporal and below for each day for which full pay is received.

It is paid to regular Service personnel and members of the Reserve Forces undertaking Non-Regular Permanent Staff Service, Full Time Reserve Service or mobilised personnel, who are on a permanent assignment to an establishment in the areas specified below for a period which is expected to exceed 182 continuous days. If you are working remotely, your alternative work address must also be within the specified areas.

The specified areas are:

What you need to know

Local Overseas Allowance (LOA) is designed to help cover your day-to-day expenses in certain overseas locations where the cost of living is higher than in the UK.

The Seagoing Local Overseas Allowance is for Service personnel who serve on a ship that is deployed outside UK waters, and covers periods of local shore leave.

LOA and Seagoing Local Overseas Allowance are both provided as a daily rate which varies depending on your location and your Personal Status Category. LOA is also affected by the number of eligible children who live with you in the overseas area. You'll receive this via your pay.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 9, section 7) before proceeding.

To find out the rate for a particular overseas location, speak to your Unit HR/Unit Personnel Office or follow the link to the Index of Worldwide LOA rates (Defnet access required).

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you claim the Deployment Welfare Package or if you’re remote working outside of the overseas location to which you’re assigned.

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, this will be processed automatically by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.
