Some assignments will require you to wear special clothes or civilian clothes daily. Rather than incurring this cost all by yourself, we have some allowances that may help.

What you need to know

This grant is for non-commissioned Regular and Reserve personnel who have to pay for and wear civilian clothing while on duty and meet the criteria set out in JSP 752.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 15, section 2) before proceeding.

You won’t be able to make a claim if you only wear civilian clothing when travelling between your home and your duty station, or between duty locations. You also won’t be able to claim if you are provided with the civilian clothing you wear on duty by the MOD.

The allowance does not cover the ordinary wear and tear of your civilian clothes that occurs when you carry out secondary duties (like acting as Officer in Charge of Sport).

There are two ways to claim this benefit: as a daily allowance, or an annual grant.

  • the Civilian Clothing Daily Allowance is payable when you have to wear civilian clothes over a period of less than 12 months. The allowance is £0.94 for each day you wear your own civilian clothes for service reasons. The allowance starts only after you have worn civilian clothes on duty for a total of 60 days but is backdated to day one
  • the Civilian Clothing Annual Grant is payable when you are expected to wear civilian clothing on duty at all times throughout the period of a permanent assignment. The grant is £343 for each complete 12-month period

What you need to do

Complete the JPA Form F019, part B for the Civilian Clothing Annual Grant or part C for the Civilian Clothing Daily Allowance and submit to your Commanding Officer for approval. Once approved it will be passed to the Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office to process for payment.

What you need to know

Regular and Reserve Servicemen and women in Close Protection Units often need to carry out their daily duties in civilian clothes. The Climatic Clothing Grant for Hot Posts (CCG(HP)) grant is to help non-commissioned Service personnel buy clothing that’s appropriate for a hot climate when they are assigned to the tropics for a minimum of 2 months in support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The tropics are the region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where the weather is normally very hot and humid. It also applies to locations outside of this region that have a similar climate.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 15, section 1) before proceeding.

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you receive allowances or grants contained within the Foreign and Commonwealth Hornby Package or if you claim Civilian Clothing Daily Allowance and Civilian Clothing Annual Grant.

You receive £877, which is increasing to £998 on 1 April 23 and is paid via your salary. The grant can only be claimed once every 3 years.

What you need to do

On notification of assignment to a post eligible for CCG(HP), you should contact your Unit HR Admin who will validate that you meet the criteria. Once validated the Unit HR Admin staff will enter the CCG(HP) entitlement onto JPA by creating the appropriate ‘Element Entry’.
