What you need to know

Longer Separation Allowance (LSA) is designed to compensate you if your Service duties mean that you’re unable to return to your duty station at weekends or during stand down, resulting in separation.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 10, section 1) before proceeding.

There are two types of separation:

  • voluntary separation is when you choose to serve unaccompanied from your immediate family who reside in the UK while you are on a permanent assignment overseas
  • involuntary separation is when you cannot come back to your normal duty station or family home due to the nature of the assignment eg if you are on operations

lsalsa

You must meet the detailed eligibility criteria set out in JSP 752 in order to receive LSA. You won’t be able to claim this allowance if you claim Get You Home or for periods when you are working remotely away from your permanent Duty Station.

The current rates from 1 April 2022 for involuntary separation are set out below. If you are voluntarily separated you will remain on level 1 regardless of the length of time you are separated from your family.

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, this will be processed automatically by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office as part of the JPA ‘Arrivals Process’.

What you need to know

The MOD’s Deployment Welfare Package is designed to minimise the stress of deployment by helping you maintain your physical and mental wellbeing.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 770 Deployment welfare package (part 2) before proceeding.

This is available to any serviceman or woman on deployment for seven days or more including:

  • Regulars (but not Military Provost Guard Service)
  • Full Time Reserve Service (Full Commitment and Limited Commitment)
  • Volunteer Reserves
  • Sponsored Reserves

The package enables you to retain contact with family and friends, meet your leisure and relaxation needs and maintain the wider psychological and physiological needs of you and your loved ones

You will benefit from:

  • free phone calls, mail service and WiFi
  • news and entertainment through the British Forces Broadcasting System – including occasional live entertainment
  • access to fitness equipment and retail services

You won’t be able to claim this allowance if you are receiving Local Overseas Allowance, although on occasion a scaled rate of LOA may be paid to compensate for the lack of certain DWP elements.

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, provisions will be made by the relevant operational headquarters.

What you need to know

From time to time, you may have to serve in operational locations that the MOD considers to represent an increased and enduring danger. The Operational Allowance was created to compensate Service personnel for the increased risk they face when serving in these areas.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 11, section 4) before proceeding.

If you require information on which locations attract payment of Operational Allowance, please get in touch with your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.

Operational Allowance is available to:

  • Regular Service personnel (other than Military Provost Guard Service)
  • mobilised reserves
  • Full-Time Reserve Service (Full or Limited Commitment) personnel if they are in a specified operational location where the allowance has been declared as payable

This allowance is not for attachés, advisers and Embassy and High Commission-based personnel, Loan Service personnel, Sponsored Reserves or Expeditionary Forces Institute personnel.

A set amount is paid for each day you spend in any specified operational location where the allowance has been declared payable. The daily rate is £29.02. Over the course of a six-month deployment, this would add up to a total of £5,281.64.

This will be paid with your salary as a lump sum at the end of the deployment.

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, this will be processed automatically by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.

What you need to know

Certain campaign continuity posts can result in a significantly increased burden being placed on personnel for operational tours that are longer than you would normally experience as part of your Service duties. These posts are necessary for preserving accumulated knowledge and developing long-term relationships. If you are assigned to a specified campaign continuity post, you will receive this allowance.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 11, section 5) before proceeding.

Campaign Continuity Allowance (CCA) is available to:

  • Regular Service people
  • mobilised Reserves
  • Full Time Reserve Service (Full Commitment) personnel

CCA is paid as a daily rate of £60 per day. To claim it you must accumulate an initial 228 days of qualifying service in a designated campaign continuity post. You’ll be paid the daily CCA rate for each day that you continue to serve in the post after that.

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you receive an FCO or UN remuneration packages (e.g. Mission Support Allowance) or claim the Overseas Loan Service Allowance.

If you require information on specific operational posts please get in touch with your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, this will be processed automatically by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.

What you need to know

From time to time, your Service duties may require you to work in unpleasant conditions beyond those already compensated for by the X-Factor. For example, the work may cause you a great deal of discomfort or fatigue, or you may be exposed to noxious substances. You may also need to take part in activities which fall outside of your normal military duties and are considered to be of an objectionable or harrowing nature. In these cases, you could receive Unpleasant Work Allowance (UWA) as compensation.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 16, section 1) before proceeding.

UWA is available to all Service personnel, including Reservist and is paid as a daily rate. The amount of money you receive depends on the level of hardship you face, and the duration of the task undertaken. There are three levels of UWA and the rates from 1 April 22 are:

  • level one: £2.98 per day
  • level two: £7.23 per day
  • level three: £21.38 per day

The local Commander (or a Commander at the appropriate level as listed in JSP 752) will decide when the allowance should be authorised and at what level the allowance should be paid. For full details of what constitutes unpleasant work, see JSP 752, chapter 16, section 1.

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you receive the Unpleasant Living Allowance.

What you need to do

This will be processed by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office, once it has been authorised by your local Commander.

At the end of each month you will then need to fill in the form at Annex A to JSP 752 chapter 16, section 1, showing how many hours you undertook work that qualified for UWA, and submit it to your Unit HR Admin.

What you need to know

This allowance is for Service personnel who are assigned to a Mine Countermeasures Vessel (MCMV) – but only if it’s classified as a Seagoing Longer Separation Allowance Qualifying Unit (SLQU) and you’re accommodated onboard overnight. A SLQU is defined as a seagoing vessel with a standard operating pattern that requires it to regularly operate away from its Base Port.

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 752 Tri-Service Regulations for Expenses and Allowances (chapter 16, section 3) before proceeding.

You won’t be able to claim this allowance if you’re not accommodated in an MCMV overnight. This includes Service people who live at home and travel into work, or those who have alternative accommodation provided ashore.

It’s also not available to those who are accommodated onboard overnight but are not assigned to the MCMV (e.g. overnight visitors).

The allowance is to compensate for the extra hardships you face.

This is a daily rate which is paid with your salary. From 1 April 22 the rate is £3.90, or £5.45 for junior ratings. In addition a new rate of £10 has been added for junior ratings deployed on Op Kipion.

You won’t be able to claim this benefit if you receive Unpleasant Living Allowance (Sea).

What you need to do

You do not need to take any action, this will be processed automatically by your Unit HR Admin or Personnel Office.
