What you need to know

Sport is a huge part of the Services lifestyle – and whether you want to play for fun or compete at unit, Service or even international level, there are plenty of ways to take part.

Sport doesn’t just keep you fit, active and healthy – it also teaches you important lessons about teamwork and commitment, inculcates a will to win and develops determination, resilience and courage. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the effectiveness of our Armed Forces. It’s great fun, too.

The Armed Forces recognise over 40 different sports, from football and rugby to kitesurfing, so there’s plenty of variety. The complete list can be found in JSP 660. You also get free use of extensive military gym and sports facilities, and certain civilian sporting facilities also offer concessions to Service personnel.

What you need to do

Read the unit sports information and speak to your unit’s sports officer or PT staff to get involved.

If you aspire to play at higher levels you need to contact:

  • Navy - NAVYNPS-PEOPLESPTSPORTGROUP@mod.gov.uk
  • Army - the Army Sport Control Board -  contact@ascb.uk.com
  • RAF - Directorate of RAF Sport (Defnet access required)
