All Army personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within three years of joining the Services. They then need to progress to Level 2 in order to promote to Sergeant. Further information, including an explanation of the academic levels, can be found in ACSO 3225.
You’ll have the opportunity to complete Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths, plus Level 1 and 2 qualifications in Speaking and Listening if you need them.
All Royal Navy personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within 3 years of joining the Navy. They then need to progress to Level 2 within 8 years of joining.
You’ll get Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths. Royal Navy personnel also complete Information and Communications Technology Functional Skills level 1.
All Service personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within 3 years of joining the Services. They then need to progress to Level 2 within 8 years of joining. RAF personnel also need to have Level 2 qualifications before substantive promotion to Corporal.
You’ll get Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths.
What you need to do
If you don’t already have Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths when you join you will be assessed to work out a learning plan and to find out whether you also need a Functional Skills qualifications in Speaking and Listening. The achievement of English and maths qualifications are embedded into the completion of apprenticeships that you are enrolled onto during Initial Trade Training.
