What you need to know

It is important that you have read and understood JSP 760 - Tri-Service Regulations for Leave and Other Types of Absences (chapter 5) before proceeding.

A Career Intermission enables Regular servicemen and women to take a specified period of unpaid time out of their Service career and provides a mechanism for their return to the Service. This could be for several reasons – for example for personal reasons or for professional development – for a period of between either:

  • 3 to 6 months
  • 6 to 12 months
  • 1 to 3 years

There are some differences in the impact on your terms and conditions of service depending on which period you choose.

The amount of time you can take may be capped at less than the 3 years to minimise gapping and maintain operational capability.

gapping is when a post is left vacant.

For the same reasons it may be necessary to restrict the number of people on a Career Intermission at any one time.

What you need to do

Applications for a career intermission should be submitted on JPA. The Flexible Working page can help you with this process.

If you don’t have access to JPA then you should submit an application to your Unit HR Admin using the form at Annex C of Chapter 5 of JSP 760, who will then enter it onto JPA.
